60% of Nurses in India’s Biggest Hospital are Victims of Domestic Violence

A recent study on the prevalence of domestic violence suffered by the nurses at AIIMS (The All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in Delhi, showed that close to 60% of the nurses were subject to some form of domestic violence.  The study, authored by Kamlesh Kumari Sharma and Manju Vatsa of the AIIMS College of Nursing and published in the Indian Journal of Community Medicine, states that physical and sexual violence affects the nurses’ physical and mental health and leads (more…)

Film Fraternity Rushes To Protect Wife-Beating Indian Actor

Bangalore, Karnataka, September 14, 2012

Popular Kannada actor Darshan, who habitually abused his wife, burning her with cigarette stubs, threatening to kill her and her baby, and battering her so violently she had to be hospitalized, was jailed for spousal battery.  However he was freed after he had the public and The Karnataka Film Producers Association (KFPA) rush to rescue him.  While the public continues to dote on their super star, refusing to accept the wife’s statement, the Film Fraternity has been pressurizing the wife to “reconcile” with her husband. Indian Judge Advices Battered Wife to “Adjust” to her Abuse

Pune, Maharashtra, September 02, 2012

A 28-year-old woman who had left her husband’s house, unable to bear his battering any more was told by the judge to return to him.   When the case came up before the court, instead of granting her a divorce, the wife was advised by Justice K Bhaktavatsala of the High Court of Karnataka to adjust to her abuse. Woman Tortured and Sexually Assaulted By Her Husband and His Brother

Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, September 05, 2012

25-year old woman Guru Eswari who was periodically tortured by her suspicious soldier-husband has been lying in a hospital bed in Thoothukudi for nearly a month recovering from wounds inflicted on her, by her husband and his brother.

Guru Eswari’s husband and his brother stripped and sexually tortured her, by inserting things like chilli powder and a hot iron rod inside her genitals, and then later stripped and tortured Guru Eshwari’s mother the same way.

So far the police have not arrested her husband and his brother husband, who is a Lance Naik in the Indian Army or his brother.    Read the newspaper report here

Woman Accused of Being A ‘Witch’ Burnt to Death

Vadodara, Gujarat, Aug 09, 2012

Seven men barged into the home of 55-year-old woman, Mohliben Dhansingh Rathwa, dragged her out,  and set her on fire, killing her.  They believed that she practiced black magic which killed one of their relative’s named Shankar.  Shankar howev er, is believed to have died of snake-bite.  Full report here.

65-Year-Old Woman Labelled A ‘Witch’ And Beaten Up

Jaipur, Rajasthan, August 04, 2012.

Four men barged into home of  65-year old tribal woman, Ganga Devi,  in Rajasthan’s Udaipur district, and after accusing her of being a “witch” who was causing sickness in the village, the men tied her up to the bed and beat her up.  They told her to leave the village or else they would kill her.  The police say the neighbours just want to grab her property, and many single women are similarly harassed, branded as witches, and either killed or chased out from the village.  Full report here.

Woman Killed by Hired Assassins for Giving Birth to Girls

The husband, in-laws and two other men given life sentence for the murder of Sadhna Singh two years ago.  Sadhna had given birth to two daughters, which made her husband and in-laws unhappy.  They decided they wanted her husband to marry another woman.  So while Sadhna was at school where she taught, two paid assassins on a motorcycle gunned her down.  Full report here

Two Doctors Rape a Patient at a Private Clinic

Two doctors of a private nursing home have been charged with the rape of a 32-year-old female patient at the facility during treatment.  The patient’s brother-in-law who accompanied her, was sitting in the waiting area outside the room.  Full report here.

Father Strangles Daughter in the Name of Honor

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Aug 10, 2012

In yet another case of so called “honor killing” , 18-year-old old Reshma was strangled, with her own dupatta (veil), by her father Salim in Hapur district on Thursday after she refused to leave the man she loved and marry the man her father wanted her to marry. Full report here
