Was there a Ploy to Protect Top Official of Delhi Water Board from #Gang #Rape Trial ?

A former Delhi Water Board top official Sarat Chander is on trial on charges of raping a private firm staffer engaged in contract work for the civic body in 2006.

However, was there an attempt to protect him from a gang rape trial where the sentencing would be harsher if convicted? Besides Chander, two other Water Board officials identified as Ramesh Thakur and Praveen Bhargava were also accused by the woman of raping her. But the court discharged them by observing that the evidence and records produced before the court only make a case against Chander.

“They are discharged of the offence punishable under Section 376 (2)(g) (gang rape) of the IPC, under which they have been summoned,” said Additional Sessions Judge Sanjiv Jain.
