Neetu Dwivedi, set on fire by two policemen died of her burns in a hospital. She had gone to the police station to free her husband, who had been detained for questioning in a crime. Before she died, she told a magistrate that the policemen asked her for 100,000 rupees ($1,578), and when she refused, they humiliated her, some reports say attempted to rape her, and set her on fire.

An 11-year-old Yasmeen on died, two days after the police say she set herself on fire. It is reported that  she was thrashed and threatened by a policeman Jaroliya  in Madhya Pradesh, for riding his bicycle without permission.  The police say she was scared and ashamed because Jaroliya had threatened to get her family jailed. The doctors at Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital tried hard to save Yasmeen, who had 100% burn injuries, but could not.

The police are waiting for the autopsy report before initiating criminal proceedings. Jaroliya and his family members were untraceable and their house was found to be locked, he said.

However even though this is the police’s version of the story, the girl’s family says it is murder. Rehana Bi, Yasmeen’s mother, however has alleged that it was Jaroliya who set her daughter on fire.

She has left behind a one month old daughter. It’s a case that so often repeats in India, where women who are abused for dowry leave their husbands, and then are talked into returning by relatives and neighbors. This young woman too returned only to be burnt to death.

Stench from a building led police to the decomposed and charred body of a woman at Konnagar in Hooghly on Saturday. Her son later admitted to killing her in a fit of rage on the night of December 31.

The suspect, Prantik Banerjee, said he stabbed his mother Rupali, set the body on fire, then wrapped the remains in a mat and quilt and stuffed it into a corner in their flat on Cripper Road.

17-year-old girl burnt alive by her stalker

A 17 year old girl from the Dalit community was doused with kerosene and set on fire by a neighbor who had been stalking her. The girl’s family was aware of the stalker and had tried to warn him off. When a bill against stalking and sexual harassment was being discussed in the Indian Parliament, the chief minister of this state, Uttar  Pradesh, did not support it, saying this was fun that all boys/men engaged in.

Woman Sets Herself and Her Twin Daughters on Fire in Kanpur

25-year-old widow Malti Devi set herself ablaze with her twin daughters who were 8 months old, at her house. All the other members of the house said they were sleeping in other parts of the house at the time of the incident.  However Malti’s shrieks were heard around the neighborhood and when her in-laws and neighbours rushed to her room but could not open the door. They broke open the doori took the three to a hospital but all of them succumbed to their injuries. According to villagers, Malti took the extreme step as she was reeling under acute depression following the death of her husband Kamlesh, a truck driver, who died in a accident last year.
