Girl Prevented from Studying by Parents Commits Suicide

A 19-year-old girl in Rajasthan, Pooja Singh Kumawat killed herself by jumping in front of a train for not being allowed to study engineering, police said. In her suicide note,  said she was unable to pursue her dream of becoming an engineer because she was a girl.  Pooja was a good student who had dreams of becoming an engineer.  However she couldn’t convince her parents.  In her suicide note she wrote: “Hamesha ladkon ko hi opportunity kyo milti hai? Mai ladki hu isliye mujhe mauka nahi mila? Zindagi ke sapne purey na ho toh, zindagi ka kya fayda? B.Sc meri majboori hai. Bad luck. Apni marzi se jaan de rahi hu (why do only boys get all the opportunities? I am a girl, so I did not get the opportunity. When dreams are unfulfilled, there’s no point to life. BSc is my compulsion. I am taking my life of my will).”  Full report here

Teenage Girl at An Orphanage Commits Suicide

A 17-year-old girl, Aruna, committed suicide by hanging herself on Wednesday at Mahipatram Ashram, an orphanage at Raipur.  The girl had been brought to the ashram at the age of five. She used to live at there and had also studied at the school in the ashram campus.  Full report here

Man Sentenced To 10 Years in Prison For Raping A Minor

New Delhi, October 30, 2011

A local court has given a 10-year jail term to 21-year-old Rajesh and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him, after convicting him of raping a seven-year-old girl last year.  According to the report filed, on May 3, 2010, Rajesh, a resident of Awaragard in Usmanpur area of northeast Delhi,  had lured the girl, playing near her house, to a secluded place near a drain on the pretext of giving her sweets and raped her.  Read the report here.

 

Tribal School Girl Raped By The Headmaster

The headmaster of a school for tribal children, raped of one of his 13-year-old girl students,  who was studying in class four. The incident happened at Sunabeda KBK Sevashram School on the night of 15 October 2011.  It is reported that though the local police have registered a case, the accused is not yet been arrested, despite the horrific nature of the incident, and that he continuously threatens the victim girl as well as the villagers supporting her to withdraw the complaint. It is also testified that the accused headmaster is a repeat offender, with a past of sexual abuse of children in his custody.  Read the full report here.

Mother and Grandmother Kill Twin Baby Girls

In a shocking case of female infanticide in southern Tamil Nadu, 21-year old Revathy along with her mother as accomplice, killed the new born twin girls she had given birth to two weeks ago.  While at the hospital, Revathy slit one of the infant’s throats, while her mother strangled the other.  Both the women were arrested in Thoothukudi district on Thursday. Mother Kills 1-Day-Old Baby In The Hospital

Pammi, a 25-year-old from Bihar’s Nalanda district, who has two young sons and had a complicated pregnancy.  A day after giving birth to a girl, Pammi strangled the baby as she slept next to her on the hospital bed.

Pammi who initially said the child died a natural death,  later confessed and said: “I made a mistake. But I did not want a girl child. It’s considered a bad omen back in our village in Bihar. So I killed her.” Read the report here

Mother Throws Baby Daughter Out of The Window

Murdered Baby Girl Thrown Off A Bridge

The body of a four-month-old baby girl that was thrown off the Chankyapuri bridge, from a moving vehicle, on March 28 has revealed a sordid tale of murder. Medicos who conducted the postmortem told the police that the little girl had been strangled to death before being dumped from the bridge onto the railway tracks. Read the report here

Mother Crushes Baby Daughter’s Head

Vaishali Kiran Ahire, a resident of  Nandgaon district, in Maharashtra, was upset about giving birth to a second girl child 40 days ago.  While visiting her parents, she crushed the baby’s head with a grinding stone,  two dacoits had broken into the house had done it. Read report here

New Born Girl Found Killed in A Canal

Jaipur, Rajasthan, January 25, 2011

The police found the body of a newborn girl, killed and dumped in a canal near Naugama, a small village in Banswara district.  Earlier families used to practice female foeticide, but after the government announced monetary incentives for couples to have girls,  families now go to the hospitals with an eye on the money offered.  However, soon after leaving the hospital, the newborn girls “disappear”. In some cases they are killed while in others the families just throw them away. Read the report here
