21 year old Chanda, who was 5 months pregnant was beaten to death by her husband and in-laws for dowry. During her wedding her parents had given a hefty dowry, but they wanted Rs.50,000 ($1000.00) more.

Pregnant Woman Battered for #Dowry and Refusing #Sex #Determination Test

31-year-old Deepali Pawar who is two months pregnant was so badly beaten up by her husband and mother-in-law , she is hospitalized. They wanted her to have a sex determination test, which she refused, because they didn’t want her to give birth to a girl, since her first child was a girl. They also wanted Rs 10 lakhs in dowry from her to buy an apartment, which her parents could not give. Often there are “punishment” dowry demands from women who have given birth to girls. Women who refuse to undergo sex determination or abort females, are often subject to extreme violence as “punishment,” often to force a miscarriage.

Woman’s headless body found on Mumbai beach

The beheaded body of a woman was found on the beach. Her severed head was also found some distance away. Police are still seeking for the identity of this woman and awaiting post-mortem reports. Last year in a similar case it was discovered that Tantric practitioners had killed the woman for a ceremonial “sacrifice.”

Attempted #Rape and #Murder of Medical Intern on Duty in #Hospital in #Assam

Nurses found the body of Dr Sarita Tasniwal at 8 am Friday on a bed in the doctor’s resting room inside the ICU of The Assam Medical College Hospital with a disposable surgical knife stuck on the left side of her neck. Sarita had been working the night shift from 10 pm Thursday and was last seen at 5:30 am Friday when she went to the doctor’s rest room. The ICU’s ward attendant, Khiru Mech, confessed to having killed Sarita, police said. Police suspect that Mech may have attempted to rape her.

Dr. Sarita’s case is a terrible reminder of the high  profile case of Aruna Shanbaug, a nurse at the King Edwards Memorial Hospital in Bombay, who while on duty in 1973 was choked with a dog chain, and sodomized by a male ward attendant. The attack left her paralyzed and in a vegetative state. Like Dr. Sarita Tasniwal, Aruna was also to get married to another doctor shortly. After Aruna’s family abandoned her, the hospital has taken care of her for the last 40 years. There have been numerous petitions made for euthanasia in Aruna’s case, but they’ve been turned down.

Dance Teacher in #Mumbai #Raped by Security Guard of Her Residence

A 25-year-old dance teacher, was raped by the security guard of her apartment building, when she returned home, after a night out with her friends.  She was found on the floor of the lobby the following morning by her brother. Her wallet, mobile phone, and other belongings had also been stolen by the guard.
